This video has a bit of a sales pitch feel to it, but I thought it was well done. Here's why:

  1. I don't think I ran into a financial advisor that hit as many topics as this person describes in this video. If you were shopping for a financial advisor, comparing what you hear to this video might give you some measure of the quality of help you'd get. Keep in mind that you have to pay for good advice, and the firm producing this video might be pretty expensive.

  2. I completely ignored the high-deductible health insurance plan with HSA while I was employed. The video correctly points out that health-care insurance will be one of your largest retirement expenses, especially if you retire before age 65. A well-funded HSA could really help in this case. I would have never considered the HSA option might help me in retirement.

  3. Taxes in retirement is an important topic. For example, if you have $100,000 pre-tax in a 401k, you really have $75,000 and the IRS has $25,000. This video shows an example where taxes can be reduced with an improve distribution strategy.

Speaking of retirement nest egg distribution strategy, I have none as a new retiree. During my 5 months of retirement I've been playing a game where I try to live frugally enough to live only on my pension, fail, then scramble to take an ad-hoc distribution. I know I need to work on this part of my retirement financial strategy.
